Six Core Values of Orthodontic Leadership

Leadership is a practice. For us orthodontists, we understand the dedication and preparation needed to drive excellence in clinical results. In leading an orthodontic team, that same dedication and preparation are critical. Leaders often face difficult decisions and stressful situations, and it’s easy to let the pressure get to them. But true leaders know how to rise above the chaos and keep their cool – elevating instead of escalating.

The ability to make an impact and be a respected leader can be challenging; you have to cultivate and practice. In the book “This is Day One,” Drew Dudley explains six ways you can become an effective leader:

Impact

Leaders create impact. They recognize the leadership of others and grow leadership instead of simply creating followers. Show your trust and respect for people by identifying their unique leadership qualities. Leaders have the power to create lasting positive impacts on their teams. A great leader can cultivate and grow leadership within their group. They must be willing to take the necessary steps to ensure that their team is prepared to take on any challenges that come their way. Additionally, leaders must be capable of facilitating a culture of trust and respect, focusing on the team’s strengths, and encouraging open communication among all members.

Courage

Leaders often have to take risks that their followers may not be willing to take. Leaders must be ready to go outside their comfort zone and explore new opportunities, even if there is a risk of failure. Taking chances allows for greater learning and growth and increases the likelihood of success in the long run. Risk-taking can help solve problems and create innovative solutions, which can be a great asset in today’s ever-evolving business landscape.

Empowerment

Empower others to believe in their abilities – True leaders work to help others; as a result, they feel capable and valued. Empowerment magnifies the impact you share and creates true value for your team and the patients you serve. We can find great results and personal success when we dedicate ourselves to outperforming others, but empowerment shifts those abilities to those around us. Drew Dudley states, “when everyone who works with you outperforms everyone who doesn’t work with you, that is when you are going to run companies.”

Growth

Growth allows you to move away from a reactive mindset, where you’re merely responding to change, and become more proactive. It enables you to think ahead, anticipate obstacles and challenges, and develop strategies to help you achieve your goals. Growth also gives you a better understanding of yourself, enabling you to identify and focus on your strengths. It also allows you to develop the skills you need to be successful as a leader.

Class

Leaders treat everyone with respect and show class. They are professional and courteous to those you work with, no matter their background or status. A true leader will treat everyone respectfully and show class, no matter what. Effective leadership requires connecting with people, so building strong relationships is critical. It’s essential to be open-minded and understand different perspectives, even when you disagree.

Self-respect

Having self-respect is essential for a leader. It helps you stay focused and motivated and shows your followers that you have confidence in your abilities.

To become an effective leader, you must practice these six core values. They will help you cultivate impact, take risks, empower others, make quick decisions, remain calm in a crisis, and stay focused on your goals.
